Leadership beyond politics

Senator Guy Barnett (The Sun-Herald, June 19) wants the Queen's Birthday replaced by a holiday for volunteers, or to honour the indigenous people.

Why abolish our oldest public holiday which honours our oldest institution which ensures leadership beyond politics and is an important check and balance against the abuse of power?

In 1999, Senator Barnett's state, Tasmania, overwhelmingly rejected the republican model the republican movement chose - almost 60 per cent of voters and 80 per cent of electorates.

As the demonstrators chanted in Paris last week: "When we said No, we meant No!"
